How Much Meat Should You Buy in Bulk?
If you've ever stood in front of your freezer trying to work out the difference between an eighth, a quarter and a half, wondering whether it'll actually fit, and doing the maths on whether it's really better value, you're not alone. It's the question we get asked more than almost any other. Here's the straight answer.
What "a quarter" or "a half" actually means
When we talk about a quarter or a half, we mean a quarter or a half of the animal, cut and packed into a mixed box, not one giant cut. It's a genuine cross-section: steaks, roasts, mince, sausages and bones, in roughly the same proportions the animal actually comes in. That's the whole point. You're not just stocking up on the popular cuts, you're getting the full range of what the animal produced, at a much better price per kilo than buying each cut separately.
It also means less waste, both on our end and yours. An animal doesn't come to us in steaks and mince, it comes whole. Buying in bulk is the most direct way to actually use all of it.
Beef & Pork Shares
Raised here at Kybong in the Mary Valley, grass-fed and grass-finished beef, and pasture raised pork, packed as a genuine share of the animal.
Every beef box gives you a genuine spread: scotch fillet, rump, eye fillet, sirloin, Y-bone and BBQ steaks, stir fry strips, blade roast, osso bucco, diced beef, nitrate-free corned beef, brisket roast, mince, sausages and bones. The pork boxes work the same way, a mix of shoulder roast, sausages, mince, stir fry strips, diced pork, belly, spare ribs, US ribs, loin chops, pork fillet and leg roast.
One thing worth knowing: our beef box weights and prices move slightly from one order to the next. Every animal we raise is different, so a bigger animal means a bigger box, and the price reflects that. You're always paying for the meat you actually receive, not a fixed number that may or may not match what lands in your freezer. Pigs are far more consistent in size at processing, so the pork boxes hold a steady price.
Want to choose your own cuts?
If you'd like more say over how your animal is processed, that's possible from a half box upward. Get in touch by email or through our contact form and we'll talk you through it.
Freezer Top-Up Boxes
Not ready for a quarter or a half, or just after more of one thing? These smaller boxes are sold by weight rather than as a share of the animal, same animals, same standards, just a smaller commitment.

Why we sell this way
We don't believe in wasting any part of the animal we raise. Selling whole cuts, mixed boxes and bulk shares means every part gets used and valued, not just the popular cuts, and that's a big part of why buying in bulk is genuinely better value, not just a marketing line.
It also means you're stocking a freezer, not doing a weekly shop. Most of our customers order every few months rather than every few weeks, and a bulk box is built for exactly that rhythm.

How ordering works
1. Choose your box and add it to your cart like any other order.
2. We pack to order. Orders close on the first Wednesday of each month, for that month's processing and delivery.
3. Your box is vacuum sealed and frozen, ready straight for the freezer.
4. It's delivered frozen, packed in an insulated, recyclable box to keep it cold on the way to you.
5. You unpack and stock the freezer. Everything arrives individually labelled, so you know exactly what you're pulling out for dinner.

What you're actually paying for
A bulk box costs more upfront than a single pack of mince, and that's exactly why it's worth being clear about what that number means.
You're paying for delivered weight, not carcase weight. Some bulk meat sellers quote a price based on carcase weight, the weight of the animal before ageing, boning and trimming, rather than what actually lands in your box. That headline number looks bigger, but a meaningful amount of that weight never reaches your freezer. Our pricing is based on the real, packed weight we deliver to your door, so what you're quoted is what you get.
You're paying less per kilo than buying the same cuts individually. Because you're taking the whole spread of the animal, not just the cuts everyone wants, the price per kilo comes down.
You're paying for genuine traceability. You know which farm it came from, how the animal was raised, and who raised it. That's harder to put a number on, but it's a real part of what you're buying.
FAQ
How much freezer space do I need?
As a rough guide, a standard chest freezer (around 200L) will comfortably hold an eighth or a quarter. A half is a bigger commitment and usually needs a dedicated chest freezer.
Is it cheaper than buying individual cuts?
Yes. Because you're getting the full range of cuts rather than just the popular ones, the price per kilo works out lower than buying each cut separately at retail.
Why does the price of a beef box change?
Our cattle vary in size depending on breed and finish, so the weight and price of each beef box reflects the actual animal it came from. Pork boxes are more consistent, since pigs are processed at a more uniform size.
Do I need to be home for delivery?
Your box arrives frozen in an insulated box designed to keep everything cold even if you're not home. If you have any concerns about timing, our team will be in touch to make sure you're happy with delivery arrangements.
Can I choose which cuts I get?
Our standard boxes are a genuine mixed share of the animal, so cuts aren't swapped out individually. If you want more control over how your animal is cut, that's available from a half box upward. Email us or submit a contact form and we'll work through the details with you.
